We are a West Virginia society with national and international reach and we are a certified and sanctioned branch of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP). NRAP Acute and Chronic Pain Ultrasound Workshop
This activity is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit (6.0 CME Credits) 2 CME Credits for live event and 4 CME credits for online access)

Pain Medicine Ultrasound Workshop

Activity Description:
This 1 day intensive workshop has been developed for both novices and advanced pain physicians providers who would like to either learn the basics or further advance their skills in ultrasound guided pain procedures. Participants will have up to 2 hours of hands on ultrasound scanning on live models and lecture to learn and identify different sono-anatomy. At the end of the workshop, you will be expected to have gained thorough knowledge
and immense confidence in the use of ultrasound for pain procedures.

50% of the course fee is refundable if cancelled more than 60 days prior to the course. No refunds are allowed for cancellations made anytime if the day of cancellation falls with 60 days from the day of the course. There are no refunds for no-shows; Colleague substitutions are welcome without penalty for the registered course.

CME Mission Statement of the WVSIPP

To provide and encourage educational and professional growth opportunities for physicians and allied health professionals, all clinical health care professionals, as well as other local health care facilities. Pain management is the focus topic including: international healthcare and advocacy, care of the elderly and disabled, neurology and neurobiology, compliance and legal issues, treatment of the entire patient and coordination of care efforts. Topics are selected based on findings from accrediting bodies, intensive data-driven analysis, core measures, patient satisfaction results, quality indicators, risk management findings, medical staff communications, and physician needs assessment results.

Educational programs are fair and balanced, unbiased ,and available to practitioners at all levels. Educational formats include live lectures, written materials, enduring medical education, and hands-on labs. This is provided via outreach to practitioners at all levels.

WVSMA accreditation seeks to assure the medical community and the public that the WVSIPP provides physicians with relevant, effective, practice-based continuing medical education that supports US health care quality improvement.

Board Members

Rudy M. Malayil, MD

President, Executive Director

Rudy Mathew Malayil, M.D., received his medical degree from Kasturba Medical College, one of the top medical schools in India. He then completed his internship in General Surgery at New York Presbyterian/Cornell Hospital in New York City, followed by residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at New York University Medical School. Dr. Malayil further completed a Pain Medicine Fellowship at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine at the Beth Israel Medical Center Campus in New York City.

Dr. Malayil is a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) and the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS). Dr. Malayil is also the President for the West Virginia Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (WVSIPP) and on the West Virginia Medical Cannabis Advisory Board. He serves on the Executive Board of the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN).

After fellowship he went to work in private practice in Maryland before practicing at St. Mary’s Medical Center’s Pain Management Department in January of 2015 where he served as the Director of Pain Management. Dr. Malayil is currently practicing at the RM Pain Center, and is a faculty member in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center.  He also serves as a consultant for Medtronic and Abbott.

Timothy Deer, MD, DABPM

President Emeritus

Dr. Deer is the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Center for Pain Relief in Charleston, West Virginia and President Emeritus of the West Virginia Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (WVSIPP). He is also President Elect INS. He is a clinical professor of anesthesiology at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, where he also received his medical degree. He completed his training in anesthesiology and pain medicine at the University of Virginia. Dr. Deer has published on a range of topics, including injection techniques, minimally invasive disc procedures, intrathecal drug delivery, and spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation. He has lectured at many national and international symposiums and has been involved in the hands-on training of more than a thousand interventional pain specialists. He serves on the board of directors of the North American Neuromodulation Society and American Academy of Pain Medicine. He is the immediate past chair of the committee on pain medicine of the American Society of Anesthsiologists, a member of the editorial board of the journal Neuromodulation – Technology at the Neural Interface and serves on several other boards and committees. Dr. Deer has authored numerous journal articles, chapters and review articles. Dr. Deer would like to make the following disclosures: He is on the Scientific Advisory Boards for Bioness, Vertos Medical, Spinal Modulation, and Stryker. He is on the Speaker’s Bureau and does scientific research for Vertos Medical and St. Jude Medical. He also does scientific research for Spinal Modulation.

Christopher Kim, MD

Director at Large

Dr. Kim earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He then completed both an internship and a residency in anesthesiology and earned his board certification in this specialty. Dr. Kim has also served as an assistant professor of anesthesiology in the pain management department at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Kim has no relevant disclosures.

Richard Vaglienti, MD, MBA, DABA, DABPM

Director of Education

Dr. Richard Vaglienti is an Anesthesiologist within the School of Medicine of West Virginia University who specializes in Chronic Pain Management. Dr. Vaglienti earned his Doctor of Medicine from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1986 prior to completing an anesthesiology residency from 1986-1990 at WVU. He was appointed to the faculty of the Anesthesiology Department in 1997 as an Assistant Professor. He earned his certification with the American Board of Anesthesiologists in 1991. In September 1994, he earned a certificate in Special Qualifications in Pain Management from the American Board of Anesthesiology. In July of 2004, Dr. Vaglienti received a dual appointment with the Department of Neurosurgery. In 2017, Dr. Vaglienti was promoted to Associate Professor. Dr. Vaglienti is the Chronic Pain Rotation Director for both residents of various specialties and medical students. He provides regular neurosurgery, psychiatry and anesthesiology didactic lectures as assigned. Dr Vaglienti has been an invited lecturer on numerous occasions at national, regional and university levels. Dr. Vaglienti also helped develop the opioid prescribing curriculum that is required for WV state licensure renewal. Dr. Vaglienti currently serves as an Associate Professor.
